Companies in Mexico used by denim brands such as Levi’s and Gap to launder jeans are polluting the local rivers with chemicals that are turning them bright blue (see above). According to local farmers the the chemicals irritate the skin and throat and cause plant leaves to shrivel. Levi’s have said that if the factory they use does not start cleaning up it’s act they will “begin a process of disengagement”. This is another example like the recently highlighted chinese sweatshops of the problems caused by the production of our favourite jeans.
