Cheap Monday have published their AW09 lookbook and it’s a cardboard world that brings to mind Fagin’s den, full of street urchins and playful Chaplin-style accessories.
The brand’s ‘affordable’ mission statement means they can approach denim in the most fashion-forward way, picking up on the edgiest of denim trends without requiring the cash outlay of premium brands. For AW09 they’ve gone to town with slashes and rips from thigh to ankle, or smaller nicks that are perhaps slightly easier to wear. Alongside the rips are patches made from off-cuts of other denims and striped fabrics, under and over the original holes and then re-ripped. Shades are dominated by classic stonewash indigo, acid washes on grey-cast mid shades and faded blacks, with the occasional shot of royal blue.
Scandinavian brands have created a real fashion niche in the denim world over the last few years, and the brands showing at Fashion Week by Berns are cementing their aesthetic as the most fashion-led denim, with a real impact on menswear in particular.
