According to TheStreet.com, distressed denim may well be the savior of our distressed economy. Who’d have thunk it? Apparel spending was expected to receive a failing grade for this year’s back to school season, but denim has been outperforming every other category in the fashion sector.

Jeans sales were up 1% to $16.3 million in June from the year prior, and grew 4% from 2007 levels. The most popular styles like distressed denim, skinnies, and boyfriends are hitting the shelves of retailers everywhere, trying to jump on the bandwagon.

“Distressed and destroyed denim is popular because right now it’s not cool to look like you’re spending a lot of money,” said an executive with Abercrombie & Fitch. “These styles are not a rich look.”

Like we told you before, we are all falling into that Poorgeoisie mindset! But get out there and support the economy by buying more denim.
