Ever since I heard about Nudie all I ever seem to see amidst the sea of G-Star rear pocket tabs prevalent here in the North-East of England is a wave of orange stitching. Yes there’s the occasional red tab poking out here and there, but what I’ve really noticed is that Nudie jeans are taking over, fast. Especially when it comes to the music scene-sters that dig Oasis and rock dark double denims, white tees, pointy boots or Converses. Seen it? Yeah it’s here and it’s everywhere.
I think it’s because of what Nudie boast to be. Lovers of jeans sent from Scandinavia to “reveal” the naked truth about denim (as they say). Educating us on the wonder of indigo and its character development over time. Sounds like a Viking Role Playing Game.
So, being an indigo patriot I really can’t ignore getting involved much longer and so my first test pair is an Average Joe fit, Embo Wash straight leg jean. Yeap, Nudie give their jeans names. I told you, denim is the new fantasy RPG.
For a regular fit, I was pretty amazed at how slim fitting they are. Nudie’s range includes other fits known to be slimmer, such as the ‘Tight Long John’, ‘Tube Kelly’, ‘Grim Tim’, ‘High Kai’, ‘Slim Jim’ and yes, ‘Thin Finn’. Any slimmer for me on the thighs and words would have to be had. The Leg opening is around 9.5″ so still some room to move around the ankles and above, but thighs to knees hugs rather nicely.
Embo in the jean description means that the embroidery is either of a different design or limited in quality, and these jeans have a more subtle character than that of other Nudie variations. The rear pocket stitching is black yet the belt loops and seam stitching all still feature the classic contrast stitching. Even the distressing wash is subtle with no directional whiskering or abrasions, nor any intention to mimic the natural wear across the thighs, but more of a gently fading over the knees and lower thighs. Definitely a pair I would match up with a suit for a smart/casual look when taking the lady out, rather than having them as my regular knockabout daytime pair.
The Average Joe Rich Black Embo Wash Straight Nudie Jeans reviewed are availble at My Wardrobe. They originally retailed for £115 but are now on sale for £57.
