As the December comes to an end it also marks my first year of doing reviews here on Denimology. In that time I have learned so much about design, fabric, finishes and even marketing. One thing I came to realize is that although I may have known about a lot of the denim brands out there, I hadn’t actually tried out their jeans. I get asked a lot by people which jeans I like the best and it isn’t always the easiest question to answer. For 2010 I have chosen my three favorite jeans from reviews I have done, looking back I see I have changed and grown just as my opinion has.
Work Custom Jeans Panther Cargo Shorts (shown above) were a favorite mine and also of Victoria’s Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio. Made of incredibly soft yet durable cotton, the attention to detail of all Work Custom Jeans goes without saying. The WCJ team are obsessed with art, cars, architecture all of which they bring to the design of their jeans. Clean lines, little adornment, comfortable fit and top of the line hardware are signature details of the brand that made their mark solidly this year. I have worn these shorts many times in many ways and they still look as they did the day I took these pictures.
Frankie B.’s BFF Sequin Jeans (shown middle) are my New Years outfit for sure! I love the way they look and feel, it’s almost like I’m cheating wearing them out because they are so comfortable. I wouldn’t have expected a sequin fabric to be so giving, light and not bulky. When Daniella Clarke designs her jeans she always takes into consideration the sexy factor. Frankie B. may have come out of the gate with their low-rider jeans, but today’s Frankie B. has many rises, styles and cuts. Light enough to be worn year round, I can see myself with a Ramones t-shirt, jean jacket and flip flops during the summer.
J Brand, who doesn’t love them? They knocked it out of the park with the Houlihan Cargos and have virtually become synonymous with the phrase “premium denim” in 2010. J Brand’s fit is precise and consistent to the extent that you could take a tape measure and go coast to coast, continent to continent measuring them and you’d find them all to be the exact same size. When I tried on the J Brand Maria High Waisted Jeans (shown bottom) I fell in love with these. Like many people, I have my own issues about how I feel about my shape and didn’t think I would ever be able to wear a high waisted skinny jean. Not the case, these are made of power stretch denim which helps hold everything in place. Not a bunch, bag or ripple from top to bottom, comfortable and classic these are perfect jeans . One of J Brand’s best details (IMHO) is their lack of branding on their jeans themselves. Instead of being identified by their logo slapped on the back pockets, the lack of logo and incredible fits has become the brands signature. Desired and worn by starlets, rock goddesses and Parisian fashionistas, J Brand has wooed us all with their designer collaborations and consistent fit in 2010.
I am thankful for all I have learned on both the consumer and business side of denim in 2010 and I am really looking forward to what 2011 has to offer. I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to review so many great denim brands this year and I would like to thank everyone for their support. Happy New Year and see you in 2011.
