Levi’s® 501® Original Fit Jeans Review
Levi’s® 501® Original fit jeans Dark Stonewash

Levi’s® can mean something different for everyone. It can bring back memories of childhood, awkward teenage years or even the first time you went out to celebrate a new job or promotion. There is a reliability and nostalgia that could hold a special place in your memory and I am sure I share this feeling with many others. By relaunching the Levi’s® Icon collection, the brand has allowed us to revisit the past and revisit how fashion has shaped our lives. Previously I was able to review the Levi’s® Trucker Jacket and the Levi’s® Barstow Western shirt, now to round out my reviews, I have the chance to look at a true Levi’s® classic – the Levi’s® 501® Original fit jeans.

There are many reasons why the 501® fit is looked at as the measuring stick on how jeans should be made. One of these reasons could be Levi’s® use of a 12.5 ounce 100% cotton fabric. Another could be the simple copper rivets and small red tab always present and recognizable on any pair of Levi’s®. Simple and without flash. Pulling out a new pair of Levi’s® 501® Original fit jeans is like being transported back in time watching my dad head out to dinner on a Sunday evening. “Classic” has been such an overused word but there is simply no other way to describe the 501®. I went true to my typical size, 32 waist and 32 length, and I would recommend everyone to do the same. The waist hit right at my true waist and was not too tight or too loose. As for every other aspect of the fit, I could only describe it as the “everyman fit”. This is not a slim straight fit but a true straight fit from top to bottom. Overall, the Levi’s® 501® Original fit jeans left just a little bit of room around my thighs to move comfortably and plenty of room at and below the knee to roll them as high as I wanted. I can see this fit working the best on larger guys who are looking to balance out any look without being confined to stretch fabrics or skinny styles of denim. The wider openings in the legs and the extra room around the seat and calves can provide great comfort all day for men looking to maintain a classic look. You can also bring an updated style to the iconic fit by pairing the Levi’s® 501® Original fit jeans with a chunky cardigan or wide neck tee.

I was able to get the Levi’s® 501® Original fit jeans in two different washes, the Dark Stonewash and the Black. I did notice a fairly significant difference in fit between the two washes. The Black wash had a much wider leg from hip to ankle but more noticeably below the knee. The Dark Stonewash wash seemed to stay true to the classic definition of a straight leg jean. There definitely has been a resurgence of the Levi’s® 501® Original fit jeans and not only with older generations. From the country to the city, many have taken up the call to reinvent how the 501® is seen in fashion today.

Bottom Line: I don’t think the Levi’s® 501® Original fit jeans are exactly right for me, but I completely understand how they have become such a staple in many wardrobes. This fit would be best suited for guys with larger legs or are actually looking for a classic straight leg jean. No matter who you are, creating a balanced look is key to making the 501® jeans look best. Go with something fairly fitted up top and don’t be afraid to show some ankle. Take a look through all the different washes and pick up a pair of a true classic jeans here or here.
