DENIM59 2 Bangladesh – the first denim show to be held in Bangladesh, makes its second appearance in Dhaka on the 15th and 16th of October this year at the Hotel Radisson. The previous edition of the invite-only show was held in March ’14 at the Radisson and was a successful event with a number of important denim mills, factories, chemical and accessory companies making their appearance.

Sandeep Agarwal, founder of the Bangladesh show, explains: “Having been associated with the denim industry for over 2 decades, it has been a pleasure to see Bangladesh grow into the second largest denim apparel manufacturing destination worldwide after China. The availability of all types of raw materials, skills and resources enable almost all major brands and retailers from the EU and US to source from here. It is for this purpose I had been planning to hold a denim event here for the last few years, and the first show happened in March ’14. Our second event shall be an extension of the first event and we hope to bring in some of the best in the denim industry.”

The first show had participation from some of the important denim companies worldwide including Candiani -Italy, Vicunha – Brazil, Arvind- India, Artistic – Pakistan and visitations by major brands/ retailers and buying houses  including companies like Benetton , C&A , Carrefour , Celio , CharlesVoegele , Cortefiel , Debenhams , Dewhirst ,El Corte Ingles ,Esprit , Gloria jeans , Grouppo Coin , H&M , HEMA , Hermes , OTTO , Inditex , Kappahl ,Levi Strauss & Co , Li & Fung , Marks & Spencer , Mondial , New Times , Next , Perry Ellis , PVH , Redpoint , S. Like the first show , some of the most important denim and related companies in technology, chemicals, piece dyes etc shall be a part of the show from Brazil, Turkey, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh , Germany, Hong Kong, China etc.

Bangladesh, despite some unfortunate incidents in last 2 years, has become the favorite destination of the retailers and brands worldwide . While , a few years back, the country was known more as a origin for sourcing cheap garments, it has quickly scaled up the value chain and is also producing value added jeans and apparel using skills and technology from around the world. The country is not only able to import fabrics and accessories from factories around the world, but its textile industry base is increasingly supporting its garment export sector. Its current denim fabric production covers about 40% of its requirements.

Some figures related to denim exports from Bangladesh from his denim website . ” While Bangladesh exported about 74 million pieces of denim apparel to US in 2013, it shipped around 140  million pieces of jeans to Europe. It was actually the largest exporter of men’s jeans to Europe in 2013  with   89 million pcs compared to 65 million pcs from China. Also notable is the growth achieved in exporting these products in 2013 despite a lot of disturbances. The denim apparel exports  from Bangladesh surged by 11.48% to US in 2013 over 2012 and to EU by over 19.65% in the same period . This is not a mean achievement and speaks volumes about the efforts put in by the garment and textile industry of Bangladesh and the continued trust reposed by the buyers”.

“We hope that through our show, we shall be able to help the industry here grow further and bring more buyers to Bangladesh looking for quality jeans, ”

Bangladesh  exports a large quantity of denim quantities to  EU, US and other countries around the world , including South Amercia, Africa , Japan and other countries in  South East Asia. It has preferential treatment in EU with its GSP and duty free access to markets in India , besides some other countries.  The USP of  Bangladesh is that most of its 5600 factories are concentrated in a  limited geographical area around capital city Dhaka and the port city Chittagong. This creates the most unique cluster for denim and other apparel manufacturing worldwide. Another major factor that goes in favor of Bangladesh is its huge pool of over 4 million skilled and semi skilled labor , including women, which is difficult to find in other countries. Bangladesh , besides having its own developed textile base, is also a melting pot for textile suppliers worldwide who contribute to its strength by providing the best of materials for garment manufacturers to convert .
