Hey loves! I’m back with another denim review and let me say that my next set of denim reviews are going to be a little different. That’s because I’m pregnant (22 weeks right now)! 🙂 I’m really excited to review some new maternity denim. There are so many brands and styles to choose from, and I’m here to guide y’all in the right direction. I’ve teamed up with A Pea In The Pod to review some of the hottest styles from top denim brands. My first review is the Hudson 5 Pocket Super Flare Maternity Jeans.
If you’ve been a long time Denimology reader, then you might already know that flare and bell bottom jeans are really my fave style of denim. I am such a sucker for that 70’s boho chic vibe. This is the first time I’ve ever tried a flare style from Hudson and the first time I’ve ever tried their maternity denim, so I couldn’t wait to slip this pair on. My entire family is a fan of Hudson, even my daughter wears their denim (did you check out her recent post HERE?).
These maternity jeans are designed with a secret fit belly, which means they don’t have a zipper fly or button closure. They slip on with ease and have a stretchy fabric sewn to the top of the jean that is stretchy and fits comfortably over your baby bump. This helps to ensure that your jeans stay in place and don’t sag. I’ve tried maternity styles that don’t have a secret fit belly and only have stretchy material in the waistband, and I have to say both styles have their pros and cons. If the secret fit belly isn’t made of soft comfortable material, or if it’s too tight then it can be a little annoying. The fabric in this secret belly was nice and soft and wasn’t tight whatsoever. I have to also add that some belly bands are lighter in color, this band happens to be the same color as the jean. I do think it’s a little better when the band is in a flesh tone color, because it won’t show through if you wear light colored tops.
The legs of this flare jean start out slim from the hip to the knee, and then it flares out from the knee down through the ankle. I think it’s the perfect flare. It isn’t too extreme and it’s still nice and slimming.
I loved how these jeans stayed in place through the entire time of wear. I wore them out to dinner and then to a football game and they didn’t stretch out or lose their shape. I’m wearing a size 27 in this style. My pre-pregnancy style is usually a 26 or 27. When I gain weight in my pregnancies (or when I gain weight period) it goes straight to my hips and thighs, so I might be shifting over to a size 28 soon, but for now the size 27’s fit comfortably. I have found that most maternity denim is true to your pre-pregnancy style, so if you’ve never worn maternity denim, or this is your first time trying Hudson, I recommend sticking with your usual pre-pregnancy size.
This denim is comprised of 92% cotton, 6% polyester, and 2% elastane. The secret fit belly is comprised of 84% nylon and 16% spandex. The inseam is 34 inches. I’m 5’10 and found the inseam to be perfect. I am wearing about 4 inch wedges in these photos and the jeans barely grazed the ground from the back.
I really love the wash of this style. It’s a nice dark navy blue. It has slight fading down the thighs to the knee and also on the bum. There is also slight whiskering around the front pockets. I love this dark wash. I think it’s perfect for fall and it’s nice and slimming. Let’s face it, when you’re pregnant your body changes dramatically and sometimes you can feel self conscious. Sticking to denim that has a dark wash or a style that hugs your curves in all the right places is important to looking and feeling your best. The back pockets have the signature Hudson “V” design, which I really like. I feel the “V” works as an illusion and slightly lifts the rear, and what gal (prego or not) doesn’t want their bum to look great?
Overall I would say I really loved this first style of maternity denim. I felt so good in these Hudson 5 Pocket Super Flare Maternity Jeans that I forgot I was pregnant. I think that’s our ultimate goal when dressing our baby bumps. We’re so happy and feel so blessed to be with child, but let’s face it, we still want to look and feel great as the baby weight piles on. Why should fashion or style take a backseat when you’re prego, right? This jean was super slimming, yet still showed off my curves. It was really comfortable (a must) and held it’s shape through the entire day/night of wear. I’m looking forward to styling this flare jean different ways this fall (like with a cozy knit, perhaps in an oatmeal hue, and a pair of boots). Oh, and heads up y’all! Flares are making a big come-back for fall, so if you don’t already own a pair I highly recommend you start shopping! Skinny jeans are always chic, but it’s nice to change things up a bit.
