Q/A with Lauren Rourke, Style Manager for American Eagle Outfitter

American Eagle Outfitters is one of those fashion brands that cater to the eternally young, no matter what age. They actually aim for the young and trendy teens, but let me tell you: Every time I go into one of their stores here in NYC, I see people of all ages checking out their clothes, especially their denim. And really, I see the grandma and granddaughter at the cash register – each with her own pile of clothes! Well, as we all know, good taste is ageless!!

So I was kind of curious about who is behind all these clothes, the denim, especially. And I was lucky to be granted the opportunity to ask Lauren Rourke, the styling manager, a few questions. Her is what she tells us:

Q: What are your trend predictions for next year?
A: Next year we are going to see a lot of destroyed denim in light, worn-in washes. Denim is getting more and more comfortable thanks to Athleisure and sports inspired looks! We’ll see a shift to slimmer legs with softer, stretchier, wear-all-day kind of denim.

Q: We already own skinny, super skinnies and boyfriend jeans. What will be the next big style?
A: I think the next big jean to add to your wardrobe will be more about fabric, wash and the destroy factor. It’s all about comfort, wearability. A perfect example is our AEO Denim X jean – it’s a high performance stretch that is softer than ever and never loses its shape. Perfect for wearing day to night. Another great option is our newest fit, the Tomgirl. It’s more of a traditional soft cotton denim fabric and is the perfect combination of washed out destroy in a super relaxed comfortable fit.

Q: In terms of denim, do you have any new materials in mind?
A: Stretch fabrics are growing. We’re seeing a lot of it in denim – denim that looks and feels like leggings. Our AEO Denim X is the perfect example of this. It’s a revolutionary high performance stretch that is softer than ever and will never lose its shape.

Q: Will prints on denim still be strong for the next few years?
A: I feel the focus is more around destroy, destruction and vintage washes.

Q: What are your predictions for the men’s denim?
A: Men’s denim is taking a similar path to women’s – workwear inspired, vintage themed washes, destruction and destroy. Joggers and Atheleisure trends are also pushing men’s denim to get slimmer and more tapered for a more tailored look.

Q: Do you believe in stretch jeans for men?
A: I definitely believe in stretch for men – especially as denim gets slimmer. It’s more of a trend in men’s then a staple style, but we shouldn’t be afraid of some stretch in those skinny jeans!

Q: What is your personal favorite denim style and why?
A: Anything black, ripped, and that has a great shape. I definitely love a great jegging to flatter my shape, but I’ve never walked away from an amazing boyfriend jean either!

Q: Which person living or dead would you most like to see in a pair of your jeans?
A: I would LOVE to see Jane Birkin in a pair of our Hi Rise denim, any fit, anywhere!

Q: What special “denim advice” you would like to give to our readers?
A: It’s all about what flatters your shape.

Q: And last, but not least – is there anything else you would like to add for our readers 🙂
A: Trends come and go, but style is forever – so find what fit flatters your shape and fits your lifestyle to best suit you!
