Dragonfly by J. Claire Custom Personal Pair Painted Jeans Review - Front View

We all know printed jeans are all the rage in the denim market. After all, with such a high saturation, it’s important for brands to always strive to come out with something unique and different. I’ve seen so much over the last year alone that validates my obsession with premium denim, and I know there’s no end in sight. I love pairing printed jeans with my usual style to mix things up and create a wider variety of looks out of items I already own! They have a way of brightening up an outfit by day and dressing up an outfit by night. But one thing I hadn’t seen until recently is a lot in the realm of custom designs. I recently discovered Dragonfly by J. Claire, which already has a hot hold on the market with some celebrity attention. These are custom hand-painted jeans—done with your choice of both denim wash and design colors. If you please, you can even send in your own jeans to be given a makeover! I recently wrote about Dragonfly by J. Claire on my own blog, and long story short, now I have a few pairs to share with all of you! Two are from her shop, and one was done on a pair of Mia & Moss jeans I reviewed recently! So here is something truly special to present to all denim fans out there…a Dragonfly by J. Claire Custom Personal Pair Painted Jeans review!

Dragonfly by J. Claire was founded by artist-turned-entreprenuer Joan Claire Smith, who always desired to be a positive inspiration. She became a certified decorative painter in 2000, and used to paint textured art on the sides of restaurants and other businesses. Several people ended up asking her where she got her resulting paint-soiled jeans, so they could get a pair for themselves! So, in 2012, Smith transferred her artwork from walls to jeans by launching Dragonfly by J Claire, after her daughter sent a letter to the Ellen DeGeneres Show, leading to a phone call back from one of the show’s producers. Her intricately hand-painted works have already gotten a ton of Hollywood attention. Selena Gomez bought two pairs, and Smith had to turn down a request to create a few pairs for grab bags given to celebrities at high-profile red carpet events, due to lack of capital. Joan Claire sources her jeans from a California company, and uses stencils or goes freehand using a soft fabric paint and a dry brush technique, layering and blending to give a “fade-in fade-out” appeal. Because of this, and her desire to stay in the designer denim market with high-end fabrics, all jeans range between $200 and $300, but Smith is working towards creating a lower price point, as well as a brick-and-mortar storefront which would offer customizations for customers’ existing items. She currently provides a personal pair order form so you can also do what I had done here with one of my own jeans! She also wants to expand her denim line to fit a variety of body shapes. Joan Claire is inspired by her late father, who was also an artist and taught her early on about giving back to those in need. She keeps this mentality through her work with the company slogan of “Create, Inspire, Give Back.” Dragonfly by J Claire also offers t-shirts to help support creative arts programs in schools with the profits, and donates 5% of net profits to a wide variety of additional causes, such as anti-bullying campaigns, children’s cancer research, Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation and various human rights campaigns! She also asks customers to suggest other causes as part of her “Urban Buzz” campaign to continuously help make the world a better place.

As mentioned, Joan sent me two of her own jeans adorned with her beautiful artwork, and had me send in a pair of my own jeans to be painted as well, to test out her new service of painting customers’ existing items. I will review the two of her own that she sent me later on! I loved my Mia & Moss Hyde High Rise Skinny in Dark Blue, and thought it would make a perfect canvas to showcase her art. I was absolutely thrilled to get them back in the mail! I can see how she has gotten such positive attention for her artwork! I chose the “Botanical Flare” design for these, which is “A burst of natural ornament artistically painted on your jeans!  Nature is our gift – wear her creative power.” I chose this pattern in the “Burnt Sienna & Cream” color which is a pretty blend of blues, pinks and browns. It is also available in “Sage & Cream,” which is more of a blue, white, and green combo! It is perfectly distributed along the front of the jeans, and on the back left pocket and right calf. So cute! I’ve worn these already several times and they look great with just about anything. These ended up looking awesome in the photos, but they are even more stunning in person. These came along with a Dragonfly by J. Claire drawstring bag and washing instructions, which state that these can be carefully washed, and the design will fade and break in just like a denim wash would, adding to the one-of-a-kind custom look that is truly your own!

I am very impressed with Joan Smith’s artwork and I feel truly blessed to have been able to spread the word with a few gifted pairs. If you enjoyed this review, please stay tuned to the reviews of the two jeans that are 100% Dragonfly by J. Claire!
