TALLEY Mid Rise Ankle Skinny in Myles main

When I heard that Ben Talley Smith was launching his own line, I expected to be blown away. With notches in his belt designing denim for everyone from Marc Jacobs, to Earnest Sewn, Alexander Wang, and Aritzia he’s the man behind many of our favorite styles. So when Ben tells you he’s launching this new project and asks you to test out his jeans, you jump. Today I’m reviewing the TALLEY Mid Rise Ankle Skinny in Myles, the perfect new, must-have blues.

Here at Denimology, we see a lot of jeans. Colored, patterned, metallic, shiny, ripped, repaired, and selvedged. We each have our favorites, and we fully understand that for everyone (especially every woman), the quest for the perfect jeans in an ongoing sartorial struggle. While every season we embrace the trends with open arms (and open closets), I am often asked which brand makes the best “I’m only going to buy one pair,” “I want to wear them everyday”, perfect fitting, classic blue jean. I definitely play favorites, and tend to stick with my classic, wear-tested list of recommendations. These Mid Rise Ankle Skinny jeans from TALLEY just made that list one notch longer.

First off, let’s start with how they feel. Super soft to the hand, incredibly comfortable, and they feel like jeans. While I love a pair of “denim” leggings for the airport or hanging out at home, too often the trend has swayed away from pairs that are true denim. These TALLEY jeans reminded me how awesome a great, classic pair of jeans really feels, hugging you in all the right places, and giving you a little extra love in the tush. There’s a second seam down the side along your hips that makes you look extra slim, and the back pockets are placed perfectly (obviously Ben nailed this – the man knows his denim). The pockets sit high and are cut to the perfect size to give your tush a little extra lift.

Once I put these on, I kept saying how these felt like supermodel jeans – you know, the ones you saw on 90’s SUPERS like Naomi, Kate, Christy, & Brooke. That whole “I don’t get out of bed for less than $10k a day” badass crew of beauties? Yeah… it’s kind of like that. There’s a sexiness to the fit – not an in-your-face overt sexiness, but that subtle feeling that comes from pulling yourself together, and feeling just a bit more feminine. That “can’t put your finger on it” sexiness. I’ll assume it comes from the placement of the back pockets and waistband, though I’m sure the extra “slimming seam” doesn’t hurt.

When I first opened the package, I was struck by how beautifully and well designed all of the branding is for TALLEY, from the back patch to the clean inside tag. The Mid Rise Ankle Skinny comes with sleek black hardware with copper metal details on the interior, and along the buttonhole, the stitching is done with a shocking bright blue thread (simply put, it’s awesome). With new brands premiering every season, it’s important for a brand to differentiate itself. After perfecting fit and feel, special design elements help make the jeans feel really unique. TALLEY nailed that.

Every pair from TALLEY comes with a “Certificate of Birth” featuring a unique GIN number (Garment Identification Number). After entering the GIN number at TALLEYNYC.com you can trace the origin of your jeans from the type of fabric used, to where the jeans were produced, and learn other facts unique to your jeans. The Certificate comes personalized to you, and nails home their whole philosophy on producing special, one-of-a-kind denim. Transparency in the denim industry is a new concept, and something I can definitely get behind. With thousands of pairs to choose from, a pair of perfect fitting, comfortable and sexy jeans, personalized with a story, easily tops my best-of-the-best list.
