G-Star 5620 Elwood Ultra High Waist Super Skinny Jeans Review - Front View

Hi all! It’s been awhile, but I’m back with another brand new review for G-Star RAW! This time I’ll be talking about and showing off the Elwood, which is an iconic style from the brand, and it just so happens that this year marks its 20th anniversary. There aren’t really any other brands quite like G-Star, and the Elwood is made up of pure unique and quality artistry with the highest attention given to the smallest details. Read on to see what makes the G-Star 5620 Elwood Ultra High Waist Super Skinny Jeans so special!

The Elwood jean was born to G-Star RAW in 1996, and represents the core of the brand’s DNA as an iconic symbol of innovation as the first pair of jeans constructed with the 3D denim method. What this means is, unlike traditional patternmaking which views the jean as a flat object, 3D Denim sculpts the jeans around the wearer with inserted panels and darts. On the 20th of every month this year, G-Star will release a limited edition Elwood design in partnership with various designers and influencers. The first release in January of this year was the G-Star Elwood Moto, a re-release of a classic designed in 1996 which was based off an archival pant made for off-road enduro racing in the 1960s. The Elwood generally looks and feels like a moto pant on its own, except for the fact that it seems to have been made just for your body shape!

The last time I reviewed an Elwood style from G-Star RAW (the Custom Slim Tapered), I sized down to a 25 from my usual 26. However, this is the classic Elwood fit, which fits very true to size. I did initially size down but had to exchange them for my usual. They were still snug, but despite all of the panel stitching and thick seams along them, they stretched out amazingly to fit (via some dancing around), with a 93% cotton, 6% polyester, 1% elastane fabric makeup. I wore them for several days in a row and they became even more comfortable over time, as a quality jean should. The high rise is definitely pretty high, I would say about 10”, fitting just below my belly button. It too felt a bit snug for awhile but got softer as time went on with multiple wears. I love how it accentuates my waist and keeps everything feeling nicely tucked in!

The detailing is simply beautiful—something you just have to see in person. The articulated knees and angled side seams at the upper thighs give so much character to these, and the reinforced heels at the back of the cuff are the cherry on top. They are given a medium wash, “skilfully finished with deep fades that contrast with the denim’s original base shade,” as the brand says! They are casual enough to wear anytime, but man I wouldn’t be doing these justice if I didn’t wear them out on the town one of these nights as well! They are so insanely flattering!

G-Star RAW is also part of the growing list of brands who understand that to continue creating iconic products in the future, sustainable practices must be adopted and kept in mind. The brand uses mostly organic cotton, recycled cotton, recycled polyester and Tencel®.

If you are looking for something that’s a little different, and like supertight, flattering jeans that will turn heads, the G-Star 5620 Elwood Ultra High Waist Super Skinny Jeans are an awesome choice! Don’t be afraid of high rises, ladies…they made a huge comeback recently and have stuck around for a good reason. These jeans will allow you to wear a long tunic or tuck in a light silky blouse for a waist-accentuating look, and will take you right from work to cocktails with stylish ease!

I’ve been quite the denim fanatic for several years now, and am happy to apply this passion to something that I can share with others. I am also a graphic designer/web developer and have done design work for two of the biggest designer boutiques in town, which is partly to blame for the 100 plus pairs of jeans I now own in my collection! It always fascinates me how much can be done with the denim fabric alone, and the constant innovations will always keep me hooked.

  1. Thank you for all the clear pictures. Helps buyers know what they’re getting. You look good in these.

These jeans look like good stretch jeans, with all the same folds and rolls and bunching. The difference is you have to endure days of wear to make them “comfortable” because they are “quality” denim? They look nice, but so do many comfortable stretch jeans that allow range of motion. I cringe just thinking about being bound up in a pair of no stretch high rise skinny jeans.

    • Glad you like my review Kitty 🙂 They aren’t really very stretchy, as they are mostly cotton, and yes they do get more soft and comfortable over time. They are very durable. I am sure they would fit just as well if you size up, if you prefer a fit that’s not quite so tight!
