flare jeans

Alicia Keys, so very in love, was holding hands with her husband, Swizz Beatz, stepping out for dinner at the new hot spot “Beauty and Essex” in Los Angeles.

Alicia was wearing a pair of flare jeans in a mid-rise, featuring patch pockets and a button closure on the side of the jeans. Very cool for avoiding the bulge of a zip fly. These jeans remind me very much of some older vintage jeans, and I love the clean, medium blue wash without any exaggerated distressing, just the worn-in fade on the front of the upper legs.

She paired her jeans with a black see-through top tucked into the jeans, and added a flowing green button-less maxi coat.

You can buy similar patch pocket jeans from McGuire, South Moon Under, and Seafarer.

  1. The top picture is proof positive that, contrary to the flares sales pitch, they do not “visually balance thighs.” On the other hand, she styled this outfit perfectly, minus the usual ridiculous shoes that women usually wear with flares. She’s wearing the right size, but the jeans would not flatter anyone.

The too thin denim, the highlight up the thigh and the patch pockets all create or exaggerate figure problems. A pair of quality denim flares in an even toned wash without patch pockets would be fine. A better style might be a pair of well-sized loose boyfriend or trouser jeans, in an even wash, worn in the same length, with a high rise and just loose enough not to hug anywhere.
