In the last few years a very controversial issue has become increasingly popular. Gender definition. These days we should be all about defining less, accepting more, and not having to gender-label everything.
And especially when it comes to denim. Gone are the days when you guys had to shop for skinny jeans in the women’s department. And menswear for women has become one of the top trends in the fashion world.
Therefore the most obvious next step is for denim brands to add unisex denim to their collections. And Gap is on it.
For their Jean ReDesign capsule which consists of a line focused on sustainability, they have included a rad unisex jean: the ReDesign Mid Rise Relaxed Unisex Straight Fit Jean With Washwell™.
“We’ve joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign challenge and followed their guidelines to make our most sustainable denim collection. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is transforming the fashion industry by designing for a circular economy. AKA longer-lasting, more sustainable denim, that’s made to be made again.
Better denim. Better planet. This pair of denim is part of our water-saving Washwell™ program. Compared to conventional wash methods, Washwell™ has saved millions of liters of water since 2016.” (You can read more about this here)
We were curious about how the wash and and feel of these jeans is in “real life”, and Gap sent me a pair to review.
The jeans are made of 83% organic cotton, 5% recycled cotton, and 12% Belgian hemp. Even though the jeans are in a heavier weight denim, they have a very soft feel. The wash, which is a darker vintage-like blue is totally authentic looking. The fit is a mix between a boyfriend and a straight leg style with slight tapering. The mid-rise is exactly how we imagine a pair of unisex jeans should be, considering these will be worn by men and women.
They run absolutely true to size, but if you want to wear the jeans rather oversized and lower slung, then we suggest going one size up. Sizes range from 25 to 34.
Definitely a pair of jeans to add to your denim closet – regardless of your gender!
