If you love selvedge jeans, if you love denim from iconic denim brands, and if you love organic and comfortable – this is definitely something you don’t want to miss:
Lee®, the iconic apparel brand known for its timeless denim style and innovative apparel, has joined forces with Artistic Milliners, one of the world’s largest vertically integrated denim and apparel manufacturers, to develop jeans that are Cradle to Cradle Certified® (C2C Certified) at the Bronze and Gold levels.
The selvedge jeans are designed to deliver a contemporary, comfortable yet high-end look. And they are made sustainably including the jeans buttons – read on below:
Both the Gold-certified Areola and Bronze certified Nymph jeans have met the respective Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard version 3.1 requirements for certification by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute across the standard’s five performance categories: Material Health, Material Reuse, Renewable Energy, and Carbon Management, Water Stewardship, and Social Fairness.
Both jeans are classic five-pocket styles made using a premium 12oz selvedge denim.
Murtaza Ahmed, managing director at Artistic Milliners explains:
“Our collaboration with Lee on the development of a Cradle to Cradle Certified range of jeans is a great example of the kind of transformative R&D and innovation that can occur across the value chain. It enabled us to use our existing Cradle to Cradle Certified denim fabric as a springboard for creating a fully certified vertical garment. The results are a reflection of our shared commitment to a circular future for people and planet by working with brands that believe in making a positive impact.”
The new range of jeans is circular by design and every component of the jeans is 100% recyclable. Crafted using 100% organic cotton, the fabric is dyed with a process that uses 58% less water than traditional denim dyeing processes. Aureola and Nymph are made in a facility generating 524000 kWh of solar power per year. All the buttons on the jeans are raw, virgin metal, meaning they have not been finished with any treatments, therefore saving energy consumption and eliminating the extra processing . The jeans were assessed for certification by EIG, a C2C accredited assessor.
“The commitment and investment Artistic Milliners made in the innovation and production of safe and circular denim and materials has positioned them as leaders in the transformation of the fashion industry. As a result, top fashion brands like Lee can now find the right partners to deliver garments that are certified according to one of the world’s most rigorous standards for sustainability and circularity. EIG is proud to be a long-standing partner to Artistic Milliners on this transformational journey” Aglaia Gómez D’Alessandro, C2C Accredited Assessor and EIG’s Fashion & Textiles Team Leader, in charge of the assessment of the fabrics.
The Cradle to Cradle Certified jeans align with the initiatives of Lee’s For A World That Works (FWTW) platform, which brings together a range of developments and innovations designed to drive sustainability across all aspects of brand activity.
Jeff Frye, VP of Product Development, Innovation, Sustainability and Procurement Kontoor Brands, parent company of Lee Jeans comments:
“At Lee, we are focused on finding transformative pathways to design and manufacture products that minimize the impact on our planet. Achieving Cradle to Cradle Certified for the Aureola and Nymph styles enables our consumers to wear Lee Jeans with confidence, knowing we are continuously improving the sustainability and circularity of our products with the good of people and our planet in mind.”
Lee’s C2C certified jeans are available from selected retail stores and online across North America and Europe.
