The Junya Watanabe Spring 2027 menswear collection continued the designer’s long-running exploration of workwear and technical tailoring.

And denim was one of the key materials. Rather than classic five-pocket jeans, Watanabe treated denim as a fabric for reconstruction and experimentation.

And if you’re looking for some real stand-out jeans – Watanabe definitely is the designer to look for! Think cout-out jeans, or denim adorned with ruffles, among other details.

Key denim trends include jeans and jackets cut apart and reassembled with asymmetric paneling and visible seams. Multiple denim washes were combined into a single garment, emphasizing handcrafted construction. Contrast panels gave garments a repaired, upcycled appearance rather than a distressed one.

As for the washes – while faded blue appeared throughout, darker indigo denim remained an important anchor, reinforcing the season’s broader move toward richer washes.

Unlike brands emphasizing embellishment or heavy distressing, Watanabe’s denim focused on construction as decoration—using pattern cutting, fabric splicing, and tailoring to create visual interest rather than relying on rips, studs, or prints.

Junya Watanabe really gives all leather lovers a good reason to look forwards to their fall 2025 collection. A total leather feast!

And we are talking about almost surrealistic geometric leather designs.

Watanabe also introduced glossy leather pieces sculpted into geometric shapes, transforming traditional biker jackets and trench coats into architectural forms.

Admitted, some of the pieces do look rather “un-wearable” in real life. But then again, who knows – aren’t we constantly changing our concepts of what to wear how and when!?!?

Has Junya Watanabe exhausted denim and patchworks, two key codes of his brand? Hardly.

All you need is to check out his latest collection which he presented during Paris Fashion Week.

Watanabe was all about cracking the code of formal tuxedos by incorporating his signature patchwork detailing to the pieces. He opted for classic wing-tip shirts and bowties as a base, but then added serious funk to his jackets via intense patchworks of fancier fabrics, including rectangles of sequins, dabs of slick leather and bullion embroideries.

Watanabe also explored the myriad possibilities of black, blue and white denim, and served up compelling options for going to a heavy metal concert, delivering the milk, hitting a black-tie gala. Perfect for standing out from the crowd at any party.

When we were checking out the Junya Watanabe fall and winter 2024 looks, can you guess what first called our attention?!

Yeah, definitely – the many variations of maxi skirts for the guys. Actually, this is a trend which has been sneaking up on us for pretty long. But more about this in our feature about skirts for men, coming up soon.

You have probably noticed that in the past few years patchwork denim has become a constant staple in most denim collections.

Learning how important it is to be more environmentally conscious, brands are reusing deadstock and left-over denim straps to cut down on waste. You can expect to see more brands pushing their sustainability message and choosing to use eco-friendly and recycled materials to produce their jeans.

Personally, anything patchwork always reminds me of what I have heard and read about the ’60s. Hippie times, Woodstock, Scott McKenzie’s Going to San Francisco… peace and love! And I still feel this vibe nowadays every time I look at patchwork denim!
