Raw denim jeans are every denim purist’s go-to for jeans.

Summing it up – raw denim is denim that has not been pre-washed nor distressed in any way. It is pretty much the antithesis to the whole distressed trend.

All denim starts as raw denim. Technically speaking, once it hits water, it is no longer considered raw.

Even though raw denim is often associated and even confused with selvedge denim, raw denim is not necessarily selvedge denim. Any kind of denim fabric that has not been washed or treated before being manufactured is considered raw denim.

And with this season’s trend of darker wash jeans, raw denim jeans might be just what you are looking for.

Just a piece of advice from your Denimology team: Hold off washing your raw denim jeans for as long as you can. The reason being that you need to soften the jeans, wear them in to make them fit exactly to your body.

And when you do wash them, avoid any strong detergent, even consider washing them without any detergent at all. Wash cold on gentle cycle inside out, and line dry. It’s the most environmentally friendly way to wash your jeans with the added benefit of extending their life, helping them to last longer. And if you really can’t do without a dryer – go for tumble dry with low heat.

Yep, unfortunately we have to tell you that as for right now we’re not seeing any exceptional denim trends for the coming months.

But then again, why always look for newness. Why not enjoy what’s out there already and take advantage of the “calmness” and give ourselves a chance to explore and discover.

What we mean by that is easy: this is a good time to give yourself the opportunity to find out what kind of denim style available right now is the best fit for your body.

Because from our own experience we can say that when there is too much newness out there, we’re always too busy chasing after those. Instead of taking a moment or two to reflex on what is best for us, what fit enhances our body shape.

Always trending, the denim skirt is a must have staple. Especially during the warmer seasons, who doesn’t love to wear one of those denim minis every once in a while.

And now, during the colder weather – it’s official – the denim super-maxi skirt is definitely a thing this fall and winter. The pencil skirt denim maxi is one of the most popular and sought after style. It’s perfect for showing off your boots or shoes, and you can also add a pair of tights or leggings to keep warm. Personally, I couldn’t survive winter without my Uniqlo HEATTECH leggings.

Another styling tip from yours, truly – I love wearing a pencil denim maxi with a cool uber-oversized sweater like the men’s cashmere from Mott & Bow which I got in XXL (I’m 5″4 and normally wear a size S/M), so it’s a real eye-catching look. But if you rather go with a cropped top, opt for a wider cut, not too fitted, to create a cool juxtaposition. These past couple of months we’ve been to dozens of previews, watched some amazing fashion shows, checked new lookbooks. And yes, lived through another amazing and super exciting fashion week.

And the one thing that got most stuck in our denim head and heart was that it was all about uber- and oversized. Yes, we’ve all done baggy and boyfriend jeans before. But now it’s gone way and beyond. What you previously thought of being oversized is considered “slim fitting” in the fashion world these days.

Meaning you really want to go all the way: waistband about wide enough to slide down your hips and held up with a – preferably – super cool designer belt. The legs as wide as you can possibly imagine. And the inseam, oh man, dragging on the floor isn’t doing it. You’ll have to able to absolutely step on the hem (picture from our previously feature about Y/Project’s fall collection below).

What happened to the term “boyfriend jeans”? How come nowadays brands classify their wide-leg, high-rise jeans as boyfriends?

Aren’t boyfriend jeans supposed to be oversized (he’s probably wearing a bigger size than you!), low-slung, baggy and a little saggy on the back and – at the most – a bit tapered at the leg, perfect for cuffing?

At least, this was the correct description of boyfriend jeans back in 2008, when Current/Elliott first came up with this amazing “new forever trending” definition.

What exactly are boyfriend jeans? They’re supposed to be your borrowed-from-the-boys jeans with that anti fit described above. Nothing high rise or wide-leg. Or do you by any chance see a lot of guys out there wearing wide-leg jeans, or high rises?

So this is why we are calling out to all the denim brands – bring us back the classic boyfriend jeans! Lower rise with a bit of a drop-crotch like slouchy fit.

We have searched for some of the best options of boyfriend jeans available right now but most of them come in a rather slim fit these days. So if you want to get that perfect borrowed-from-the-guys look, we suggest to size up. Remember, boyfriend jeans loose the look, or their “meaning” if you wear them too fitted or get them in a too high a rise. Those would qualify more as being mom jeans.

Another option for you would be to actually shop in the men’s department. I, personally, always go for a pair of the men’s Levi’s 501 jeans.
