Introducing: Tanuki Denim Made In Japan

men's jeans

Hailing from Okayama, Japan, Tanuki is a newly-formed denim label built on knowledge and quality.

Founded by a group of gifted craftsmen, the brand prides itself on mastering every level of the denim process. With decades of cumulative loom experience, the “super-team” behind Tanuki is able to manipulate shuttle looms and create unique and original fabrics unlike anything on the market today.

If you are looking for a very interesting and quite different kind of selvedge jeans, then check out the brand’s Yurai denim.

The Yurai denim from Tanuki is a 15oz cobalt weft selvedge denim, developed using a natural indigo rope-dyeing method to produce a rich spectrum of blues across the fabric’s surface.

Pre-washed for a softer feel, the denim is loosely woven for a uniquely slub texture. The name “Yurai” (translated to “origin” in Japanese) reflects the denim’s distinct weft and its ties to Tanuki’s iconic aesthetic. Exceptionally durable and detailed with custom Tanuki hardware, this fabric will age to a vibrant electric blue over time.

Another option is the Kakishibu denim:

The 14.5oz indigo-kakishibu denim combines traditional rope-dyed indigo with a kakishibu tannin dye process to produce a unique amber-indigo hue.

Woven from a mix of Australian and U.S. short-staple cottons, the slubby texture brings the vibrant weft yarns to the surface. While most kakishibu dyes yield a muted tan, Tanuki has developed a rich tone reminiscent of persimmon skin. The result is a denim with bold contrast and visual depth. Finished with signature blue contrast stitching, custom hardware, and a branded leather patch.

An important factor for those of you who love and appreciate original hems. Tanuki offers chain-stitch hemming. Meaning that when purchasing denim from Tanuki, you can easily have your jeans custom hemmed to your preferred inseam length. Just add Chain-Stitch Hemming to your shopping cart.
